This definitive guide to developing renewable energy CDM projects in Latin America - the largest market on the doorstep of the United States - provides business leaders, investors, project developers and host country offices with the one-stop guide to successful CDM renewable energy project development.

The book opens with an accessible guide to the CDM that explains what it is and how it works in both theory and practice with a step-by-step guide for investors, project developers, consultants and Designated National Authorities (DNAs). The book then provides valuable country-by-country market analysis of Latin America with a focus on the electrical sector, renewable energy incentives and the overall investment climate that provides an authoritative guide to the most and least favourable places to develop projects. The final section provides guidance for how to overcome the identified barriers with practical actions for successful project development.

'Dr. Lokey presents an in depth study of the regulatory context for renewable energy in each country in Latin America. The book is an enlightening analysis of both generic and regional barriers to the development of renewable energy projects that wish to claim emission reduction credits under the Clean Development Mechanism. With an excellent country by country assessment of challenges and opportunities, it is a useful reference for project developers, policy makers and academics alike.'
Christiana Figueres, Principal Climate Change Advisor to ENDESA Internacional and Vice President of the Bureau of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change

'Latin America has been pioneering the concept of CDM but has recently lost steam. Renewable Energy Projects Under the Clean Development Mechanism: A Guide to Latin America provides a unique insight into the challenges faced by renewable energy CDM project developers in the region and the ways to overcome them. Everyone contemplating acquisition of CERs from renewables projects in the Latin American region should read this book.'
Axel Michaelowa, Perspectives GmbH, Member of the CDM Registration and Issuance Team of the CDM Executive Board, 2005- IPCC lead author for the Flexible Mechanisms (CDM/JI)

'This book is a valuable source of information for those interested in the evolution of the global markets for the service of certified emission reductions. Although the CDM is continuously evolving, Dr. Lokey's comprehensive review of the opportunities, risks, barriers and experiences of CDM project development helps to understand this growing global phenomenon. It also points to changes that must occur in order for the CDM to evolve into a more efficient and abundant source of cost-effective CERs, if the world is to meet its global emissions reductions targets.'
Thomas Black-Arbelaez, Director, The Andean Center for Economics in the Environment

'Dr. Lokey roots out and explains the challenges of implementing the CDM in Latin America with great clarity and insight, based on hard-won knowledge from thousands of miles and hours of field work and first-person experience. Like any new and complex market, the CDM faces institutional barriers, market distortions and irrational behaviour. This rigorous and practical book points the way to resolving these issues and enabling the CDM to fulfil its promise of equitable and cost-effective global climate protection.'
Joel Swisher, Principal Consultant, Camco International
