ONLINE PUBLISHING PROJECTS MANAGER
KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER PARTNERSHIPS (KTP) ASSOCIATE

Earthscan is a full-service publisher of academic books, journals, reference works and publications for a wider public, whose size and focus offers an in-depth knowledge of selling to mixed markets, reaching the trade, academic research, teaching and professional sectors, without being restricted to just one.

The aim of the KTP project is to develop a state of the art online publishing service to increase the customer base and to establish an on-line cross-disciplinary community.

You should have a BSc(Hons) 2.1 minimum in Business/Computing/Information Systems or relevant subject You will have experience of specifying and managing web based systems development projects, using state of the art social and web technologies. Preferably with experience of the latest (opensource) technical and accessibility standards, and the potential to utilize the rich functionality of the web (Web 2.0) including support for full-text and metadata searching, browsing, personalization and support for multiple business models.

Show evidence of excellent interpersonal skills, with an ability to work with company staff and clients at different levels. Also it is essential to demonstrate excellent communication and presentation skills, both verbal and written. Candidates must provide evidence of an interest in publishing or media, and an awareness and interest in the subject matter is also desirable.

Ability to think creatively and solve problems, with strong project and time management skills are needed, and you should be self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as part of a team.

This is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) appointment in which the candidate will work full-time at the company, but will be employed by London South Bank University. All the usual benefits of KTP Associate status apply to this post: generous training package, university and company supervision, the opportunity to enroll for a fully sponsored higher degree and the potential to develop a permanent position with the company.

SALES AND MARKETING EXECUTIVE – SUBSCRIPTION AND ONLINE PRODUCTS

Reporting to the Head of Sales and Marketing, this position is a vital new role designed to take Earthscan’s digital initiatives forward.

The ideal candidate will have experience selling subscription products with demonstrated success. They will have a clear awareness of the changes publishers are addressing in a digital world. Excellent communication skills with a flair for building relationships and developing partnerships will be essential. Writing sales copy, an eye for design, great organizational skills and the ability to work independently are a prerequisite.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Meeting sales and marketing targets for Earthscan’s current subscription products
  • Contributing to the shaping and strategic planning of future subscription and online products
  • Researching, generating and following up on sales leads and building sales channels across academic and professional markets
  • Creating and disseminating marketing material
  • Planning, budgeting and reporting
  • Liaison with other Earthscan departments and the US office
  • Travel and organization of events and conferences

ASSISTANT ACQUISITIONS EDITOR (NORTH AMERICA)

Earthscan, one of the world’s leading publishers of books and journals about sustainability, seeks an assistant acquisitions editor for its Washington DC office. The Assistant Editor will work with the publisher of RFF Press, an imprint of Earthscan, to develop its editorial program in environmental economics, law, and policy. In addition, he or she will be responsible for developing a publishing program to build on the Earthscan list and take advantage of the shift to low-carbon and sustainable technologies, businesses and government policies in the United States and internationally.

We are looking for someone with energy and imagination, and both a commitment to these areas and an understanding of the publishing challenges and opportunities they present in print and online. A high level of relevant IT, communication, networking, and organizational skills are also essential.

Responsibilities will include the planning and management of an acquisitions program including research to identify new areas, develop author leads, and establish publishing relations with professional and other associations; analysis of competing publishers and products; soliciting and screening manuscripts; organizing and interpreting peer reviews; drafting promotional copy; preparing project proposals and financial analyses; contract negotiation; and budgeting and forecasting on a per title and program level. The position will involve extensive liaison with colleagues and partners in the U.S., U.K. and worldwide, as well as travel and conference attendance as needed. Salary commensurate with experience.

Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree or above in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum two years’ editorial or marketing experience in professional, academic or society publishing.

Internships

Sales & Marketing Internship

This internship is a position that will involve a variety of tasks covering all areas of the sales and marketing department. 
This will include, but not be limited to, market research, data collection and entry, updating product information, creating marketing materials, helping with events and conferences, assisting on textbook campaigns, working on permissions requests and helping out with general office administration tasks. 
Training on all our systems will be provided. 
We are looking for someone who is able to work one or two days a week throughout the term, with the potential for paid work during holidays. We need candidates who are highly organized, reliable, computer literate and able to handle a busy and varied workload.
