Earthscan turns twenty
"Earthscan is part of the DNA of intelligent environmentalism"
Bill Adams, Moran Professor of Conservation and Development,
University of Cambridge, UK
Earthscan, the world's leading publisher on environment, development and sustainability, marks 20 years of publishing this month. May 1988 saw the publication of our first two titles, Women and Environment in the Third World
and The Greening of Aid, demonstrating how integral environmental issues are to social and economic development and also the commitment to innovative solutions and social justice that has been at the heart of its publishing.
In the 2 decades
since, environmental threats and the challenge of sustainability have moved
to the very centre of political, business and, increasingly,
personal agendas. Earthscan has charted and often led this process with a succession of inflential and award-winning books, such as Blueprint for a Green Economy, Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance, Amory Lovins’ Factor Four, Tim Lang’s Food
Wars, Chris Goodall’s How to Live a
Low-Carbon Life, and Jonathon Porritt’s Capitalism
As If the World Matters.
Today, the scale, urgency and difficulty of the problems are reflected in the media: Food miles or farming
livelihoods in Africa? Wind farms or
wildlife in the Hebrides? Biofuels or
food security throughout the world? The debates revolve around the question of whether we can live withnig the Earth's environmental limits, creating a low-carbon economy that delivers equitable and environmentally sustainable development. Earthscan's publishing has expended to match the growth in awareness and the need for reliable information With 100 titles due out this year and 900 in the backlist, it continues to publish accurate, enlightened and effective books and journals on all aspects of research and debate on sustainability.
Describing their acheivement, Camilla Toulmin, Executive Director of the International Insitute for the Environment and Development, commented “In twenty years, Earthscan has given us the solid
evidence and provoking insights that light the way to a more sustainable planet”.

In praise of Earthscan
"Earthscan has carved out a special place in modern policy debate.
It publishes key books on almost all issues which matter most. It
uneeringly gets the tone and information right for anyone struggling to make
sense of the complexity of the sustainable development challenge."
Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy,
City University, and author of Food Wars
“If you want to know how to keep our only planet habitable, to make it
equitable and sustainable, think first of Earthscan. The best answers we have
are probably somewhere in Earthscan's list.”
Walt Patterson, Senior Fellow, Royal
Institute of International Affairs, and author of Keeping the Lights On
"Earthscan
is a brilliant publisher. They use their
gifted editors to make text as good as it can be, they use their artists to
make graphics truly top drawer, and they use their global networks to market to
the largest and most powerful possible audience. With K. Madhava Sarma and Kristen N. Taddonio
I published two books with Earthscan with such satisfaction that I am sure to
come back when our next book is ready."

O. Andersen, U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency, and author of Technology Transfer for
the Ozone Layer: Lessons for Climate Change
“Earthscan - world class publishers”
D.R.
Humphreys, author of Logjam (winner of
2008 Sprout Award)
“No-one could ever be in any doubt about Earthscan’s total commitment to
improving our understanding of the most important issues that the world faces.
It is a wonderful achievement to have built such a comprehensive and authoritative
list of publications.”
Chris Goodall, author of How
to Live a Low-Carbon Life, (winner of 2007 ICVA Clarion Award)
“Over the last two decades, Earthscan has published many of the most
interesting books on environment and development. Within this, it has
also contributed enormously to the literature on urban development in Africa,
Asia and Latin America; indeed, as interest
grows on this topic, it is mostly to Earthscan's very impressive and diverse
list that people will turn.”
Dr.
David Satterthwaite, Senior Fellow, IIED and recipient of the Volvo
Environment Prize, 2004, and author of Environmental
Problems in an Urbanizing World
“Earthscan is a
publisher that cares about what it publishes, believes in the issues its
authors address and treats its authors fairly and as human beings. Over its 20
year history it has greatly broadened the range of work available that tackles
key issues across a wide range of environmental and development fields at
practical and policy levels – from food to health, travel to trade, and so much
more. If books can help change the world for the better, then Earthscan is up
there leading that change.”
