Treehugger brings our attention to the Brit Insurance Design of the Year Awards 2009. The ‘jar lids’ offering caught my eye as I often find myself hording jars thinking I’ll find a use for them at some point, which use often ends up being to provide ballast for my orange recycling bag. The Green Felt Protest Suit also jumped out, although it may cross some people’s definition of ‘non-violent demonstration’.
Last year’s winner was the One Laptop Per Child computer. I’m not sure how ultimately impactful this has been (anyone with any info – please leave a comment), but much as I like the jar lids and wooden radios, I feel they are destined to adorn the pages of special interest gadget and gift magazines rather than being truly revolutionary. What are the (possibly unremarkable) products which have really made our lives more sustainable?
