Let's face it: Since mass tourism emerged in the 1950s, a large part of the tourism and travel business has been exploitative, ignorant, unfriendly. In short: anything but a welcoming experience to the people involved - except the tourists, of course. Who is to blame? The business owner? The ignorant tourist? The greedy local politican?
For Harold Goodwin, Professor of the International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) at Leeds University, and Dr Dawid de Villiers, UNWTO Chairman of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics, one thing is clear: "We all make choices when we travel - how, when and where we go, where we stay and what we do. In our travel we can build up or destroy human values. Travel can broaden our minds, but only if we travel with our eyes open and receptive to the diversity which we encounter."
