Givecar, a new 'green social enterprise', introduce their scheme in a guest article for The Earthscan Blog
When it comes to climate change most people and corporations simply are not doing enough. This is not true when it comes to Giveacar; a brand new, green social enterprise.
Giveacar offer free collection and disposal or auction of any vehicle in the UK. They are recommended by Keep Britain Tidy and Do the Green Thing for their strong environmental policy. Every car is recycled to the highest standards. On top of providing this free, green service Giveacar is committed to donating 80% of all money raised from the scrap metal or auction value of cars to UK registered charities and raised over £30,000 for charity in the month of July alone.

The need to buy an environmentally friendly car is well publicised and encouraged whilst the correct methods of car disposal are only recently receiving coverage. Cars are classed hazardous waste making their proper disposal highly important. They can release chemicals harmful to the environment if they are improperly disposed of, for instance just 1 litre of leaked oil and brake fluid can contaminate 100 litres of water. It is this risk that has resulted in the recent Government crackdown that prevents owners from relinquishing legal responsibility by claiming their car has been ‘self-scrapped’ in their logbook.
Of the 2 million cars that are taken off the road only 1 million are issued a Certificate of Destruction the remaining 1 million are likely to have been cherry picked for parts by rogue scrap dealers and improperly disposed of. The consequent damage on the environment if cars, classed hazardous waste, are improperly disposed of is avoidable if owners ensure they select a legal disposal service and this does not have to cost them a penny.
Giveacar use only Authorised Treatment Facilities where 85% of the weight of each car is recycled. Owners are provided with a Certificate of Destruction as required by the DVLA. Car owners need to be aware that they are responsible for their car and that calling just any scrap car service could cause them problems with the Government under these new guidelines.
It is an organisation dedicated to a greener UK by ensuring cars don’t fulfil their title as hazardous waste and this enterprise is another great step in the direction of a green and charitable future. You can donate your car to Keep Britain Tidy, Do the Green Thing or any UK charity.
